Council member rewards policy

1. Purpose

This policy sets out how the council recognises and rewards members who carry significant management, professional or operational responsibility. Council work is voluntary at heart. The rewards below are a thank-you for outstanding contribution. They are not a salary and do not create an employer-employee relationship.

2. Who can be considered

A role holder can be considered for a reward if they meet all of the following:

  • They are responsible for a core area (leading a team, running a project, budget or operational responsibility).
  • They have shown real results, commitment and met the goals set for the trial or activity period.
  • They work openly with the rest of the council and represent it well.

3. How rewards are reviewed and approved

  • A proven period: A reward is only considered after a set period (such as a semester or a project) in which the person has shown they can deliver.
  • Discretion: Whether a reward is given, and how much, depends on actual performance and is decided solely by the council management.
  • Budget: Every reward depends on budget approved in advance and available funding. Holding a role does not by itself commit the council to any payment.

4. What a reward can be

Depending on the council’s decision and budget, a reward can take several forms:

  • An activity scholarship or a one-time grant.
  • Paid training, conferences or professional tools.
  • Official recommendation letters and public recognition.
